'How great is that?' Baton Rouge principal's personal notes inspire students before big test

Updated: Jul 11, 2020

On Monday morning, as he readied to start five long days of LEAP testing, Ronald Harris walked into an unexpected scene. His fellow eighth-graders at CSAL were standing by their desks, reading what turned out to be messages written by their principal, LaMont Cole.

None were the same. Over the course of 10 hours the day before, writing in colored markers directly onto their desktops, Cole had handwritten personal messages of encouragement and inspiration to each and every one of the 279 students at the popular charter school in Baton Rouge.

The 14-year-old Ronald read his own message again and again in disbelief, committing it all to memory: “No matter what you do or say to me, I will always believe in you. You are a winner. Don’t ever forget it. Make me proud this week! Good luck, LaMont Cole.”
